ALGIERS- President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune chaired Saturday the opening of the Government-Governors meeting at the Palace of Nations, in Algiers, under the theme “Economic Revival, Regional Balance, Social Justice.”

This two-day meeting will be marked by the participation of members of the Government, Governors of the Republic, representatives of the Parliament’s two chambers, executives of different ministerial sectors, companies and public authorities as well as experts.

The meeting aims notably to assess the local socio-economic development policies, by focusing on the results that have been reached so far and by analyzing the hindrances, and also on the lessons to be learnt and ways to speed up the change process to efficiently meet the population’s needs and prepare the ground for a renovated local development.

It also aims at considering a new approach in terms of local development which must pave the way to the implementation of a new framework of development, execution, follow-up and evaluation of local development programmes.

The participants will mainly assess the implementation of the instruction given by President of the Republic in the previous meeting, examine ways to give a new momentum to the local development process, particularly the points related to the adaptation of the local development programmes to those of balanced regional development.

Counter corruption: Strengthening legal framework, protecting honest officials

President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune said Saturday that the "consolidation of the legal framework to fight corruption must be combined with a commitment to protect the honest officials," adding that the move "will be supported by a special legal system.

"Our ongoing efforts to strengthen the legal arsenal to fight corruption, ensure transparency and foster a culture of assessment and accountability are accompanied by a commitment to protect officials of integrity," Tebboune said at the opening of the Government-Governors Meeting at the Palace of Nations.

"Written instructions have been given in this respect and we will reinforce them with a special legal framework."

President Tebboune advocated "efficiency and the obligation of results among the rules to achieve the goals set."

Recalling the presidential instruction not to take account of anonymous letters of denunciation in legal proceedings, the Head of State considered that this is a double-edged sword.

"Anyone who has information in this regard is invited to speak to the media," he added.

Concerning the investigations into corruption cases, President Tebboune said he had given instructions for a "centralization of investigations, now no longer within the prerogatives of local security services."

The President of the Republic called on the governors to be "the engine of investment promotion, by receiving the investors to bar the way to intermediaries and achieve the objective of creating wealth and jobs."
